Edward P. Bond, CPA, CFE, CIRA

Founding Member

Ed Bond has been a significant part of Bederson’s history and success for more than 40 years and has served as Managing Partner and Chairman. He oversees a department specializing in bankruptcy and forensic accounting and has been involved with hundreds of bankruptcy cases during his tenure.

Mr. Bond has earned a leadership position in the business and financial community, including serving two years as president of the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy. He was president of a member brokerage firm of the New York and American Stock Exchanges. He was elected sole public member of the Nominating Committee of the American Stock Exchange Board of Governors.

He has served as a court appointed mediator, responsible person, receiver, umpire, fiscal agent, arbitrator and has acted (along with Bederson) as the bankruptcy and financial consultant to the Futures Representatives in the asbestos bankruptcies of G-1 Holdings, Federal-Mogul, NARCO, A.P. Green (Global Industrial Technologies, Inc.), and AcandS.  Mr. Bond served as the Future Claimants’ representative in State Insulation Corp’s asbestos-related bankruptcy.

In April 2013, he was appointed independent managing director in the Oak Rock Financial bankruptcy matter. In 2016, Mr. Bond was appointed CRO for EZ Mailing Services, Inc. et als. and in 2017, he was appointed Plan Administrator.  He was appointed to the board of directors of the reorganized (Chapter 11) Pittsburgh Corning Corporation and Pittsburgh Corning Europe.

Mr. Bond is included in the Register of Mediators of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. He is treasurer, executive committee and board member of East Orange General Hospital; member of Maplewood Country Club’s board of directors and has served on the Daughters of Israel board of directors. He also serves on the board of directors for Dots, LLC. retail stores and Big M (Mandee and Annie Sez).

He has participated as an expert witness in a moot court proceeding at Seton Hall University and presented on forensic accounting to students at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He served on a committee with Judge Moore and then Assistant U.S. Trustee Novalyn Winfield to evaluate the role of examiner in the District. He has testified as an expert witness and served as an examiner appointed by the office of the U.S. Trustee. He has acted as Trustee for numerous matters including the successful Chapter 11 reorganization of Dr. Madis Laboratories (100% cash plus interest to all creditors – secured and unsecured).

Mr. Bond is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. He is a licensed Certified Insolvency and Reorganization Accountant (CIRA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He has been a featured seminar speaker for organizations including the New Jersey Panel of Bankruptcy Trustees and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. He has authored many articles including “Anatomy of a Successful Turnaround in Chapter 11” which was published by Turnaround & Workouts Magazine.

Mr. Bond was honored by The Valerie Fund at its 2013 Annual Thanksgiving Ball for the integral role he played in its development serving as treasurer, vice president and member of the board. Named “Outstanding Young Man of America,” Mr. Bond served as trustee for the PAL Boys’ Club; president of the Newark Jaycees and treasurer of the State of New Jersey Jaycees. At the request of President Richard Nixon, he served as the State Citizens’ Chairman of the Small Business Administration (SBA). He is past president of the Garden State Cancer Center Foundation, past board member and chairman of the Audit Committee for “The Scholarship Fund For Inner-City Children” and has served as treasurer of the Ruth Bass Foundation.

Mr. Bond attended New York University and was named to the Dean’s List. He received a B.S. Degree in accounting from Seton Hall University.

He and his wife reside in Morris County.

Steven P. Bortnick, CPA

Steven is based in Bederson’s Fairfield office and is a member of the firm’s Insurance Committee. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey as well as a New Jersey licensed Life Insurance Producer.

Steven has over 25 years of experience in public accounting providing generations of entrepreneurs and their families with tax, accounting, estate planning and business advisory services. Steven’s practice includes clients with businesses in the healthcare industry, wholesale product distribution and light manufacturing, insurance agencies, third party administrators and real estate management. Having personal involvement in a family-owned manufacturing and distribution business, Steven brings first-hand experience, knowledge and an operator’s mentality to his engagements.

Steven is a member of the AICPA (American Institute for Certified Public Accountants) and the NJSCPA (New Jersey Society for Certified Public Accountants). He has served as Director of the Essex County Chapter of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and has spoken at continuing professional education seminars. Seymour Bressler, CPA, CFE

Based in the Firm’s Fairfield office, Sy is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the States of New Jersey, New York and Florida. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner. With more than 40 years’ experience providing accounting and business advisory services to privately held manufacturing, distribution, retail, legal and healthcare clients, Sy maintains a keen understanding of tax and financial concepts. He also assists high net worth clients with estate and financial planning and plays a key role for clients in matrimonial litigation with respect to support matters.

Jeffrey E. Callahan, JD, LL.M., CPA

Based in the firm’s Fairfield office, Jeff is Bederson’s Tax Partner-in-charge. He has over 20 years’ of experience in the areas of complex domestic and international tax issues; specifically in matters affecting inbound and outbound transactions of foreign-owned U.S. Corporations and U.S.-owned controlled foreign operations. He has significant experience in international tax compliance and has assisted more than 300 clients with the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program. Jeff also represents two Financial Institutions before the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) pursuant to the DOJ Program for non-Prosecution Agreements or non-Target letters for Swiss banks.

In addition to assisting clients with international tax matters, Jeff provides domestic clients with accounting, auditing and business advisory services. Among his industry specializations are construction and demolition, insurance brokerage, financial professionals and high net worth families.

Jeff is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of New Jersey. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) and the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). Jeff is admitted to practice before the United States (U.S.) Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

A designated International Tax Resource of AGN International (an exclusive world-wide association of independent accounting firms), Jeff has written and spoken extensively on a full spectrum of tax-related matters with particular emphasis on Voluntary Disclosure. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Samuel J. Silberman College of Business Administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Rutgers University Graduate School of Management.

From 2010 to 2014, Jeff served as a presenter at New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) seminars on ethics and tax planning.

Jeff was named to NJBIZ’s 2009 “Forty Under 40 Class” which recognizes New Jersey’s most dynamic business leaders under the age of 40.

Timothy J. King, CPA/CFF, CFE

Partner

Tim oversees the firm’s Insolvency and Litigation Services Department which specializes in bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, forensic accounting and litigation services. He is a recognized expert in the field of bankruptcy and has been personally involved with more than 1,000 bankruptcy and other litigation matters. He has testified as an expert witness in more than 50 cases in depositions and in U.S. District Court as well as other bankruptcy and state courts.

Tim had extensive forensic accounting experience prior to joining Bederson. He worked in the internal audit department of two Fortune 500 corporations. As Manager of Treasury Services and General Accounting, a $100 million division of CR Bard, Inc., Tim had responsibility for more than 20 employees. As Senior Internal Auditor, Tim conducted fraud investigations, one of which resulted in the indictment of 12 individuals and recovery by the company of approximately $500,000.

Tim has held many appointments over the course of his career including; Special Master in Federal District Court Case,State Court Trustee and State Court Receiver. He was selected to serve on a committee with Judge Moore and the U.S. Trustee to evaluate the role of Examiner in the District of New Jersey and currently serves as an Examiner in the District. Tim also served as a duly appointed Chapter 11 Trustee.  He was selected as post-confirmation liquidating Trustee on numerous occasions and has assisted Trustees and other Fiduciaries in numerous liquidations.

He has been a featured speaker for organizations including; Bankruptcy Bench Bar Conference; New Jersey Panel of Bankruptcy Trustees; New York Institute of Credit; New Jersey Society of CPAs; AGN, an international affiliation of accounting Firms; and International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation.

Tim currently serves as Treasurer of the West Orange Lions’ Club and is a past president. Toni Klimowicz, CPA

Based in the Firm’s Fairfield office, Toni is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey and an accomplished QuickBooks Pro Advisor. Charles S. Lunden, CPA/CFF, ABV, CFE, CMA, CLU, FLMI, CGMA

Chuck is responsible for forensic accounting and economic consulting at Bederson. He has provided expert testimony in more than 115 cases and routinely provides consultations on damage measurement, personal injury and wrongful death studies, business valuations, and accountants’ malpractice.

Chuck has extensive expertise in bankruptcy and reorganizations, fraud investigations, insurance disputes, healthcare fraud and abuse, as well as measuring damages for new and unestablished businesses. He also has experience in intellectual property disputes, construction delay damage cases, merger and acquisition disputes, lender liability issues and employment disputes.

Mark A. Mazza, CPA

Managing Partner

Mark serves as Bederson’s Managing Partner and is based in the firm’s Fairfield office. He has more than 35 years of experience providing accounting, audit and business advisory services to clients in the restaurant/food service, construction, real estate, law firm and healthcare industries.

He is responsible for the firm’s governance and long range planning. Mark is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey (CPA), a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA), and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

He has authored articles on subjects including issues facing restaurant owners, tax credits for alternative fuel and accounting and management best practices. He is solicited for participation in leadership roundtables and is frequently quoted in publications including NJBIZ, New Jersey Business, Commerce Magazine and more.

Under his leadership, Bederson has achieved a perfect peer review record, an FBI commendation, and 24 medals from the New Jersey Law Journal for being voted “Best of” in every accounting category of their survey.

Charles N. Persing, CPA/CFF, CIRA, CVA, CFE

Partner

Chuck is part of the Insolvency and Litigation Support Services Division of Bederson. His practice includes representation of Chapter 7 Trustees and Creditor’s Committees, performing valuations and handling commercial disputes. As the firm’s representative, he is an AGN Business Valuations and Litigation Group core team leader.

Prior to his work at Bederson, Chuck provided a range of financial consulting and accounting services in his roles with public and private companies and public accounting. He spent four years with a regional accounting and consulting firm as director in its litigation support group where he specialized in complex litigation cases and valuation matters.

Chuck held a senior position with a publicly traded company during its Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 proceedings where he assisted the company in many aspects of the bankruptcy proceedings. During the last two of those years, his efforts were spent providing extensive litigation support in various matters for the Chapter 7 trustee, including a successful $320 million preference and contract dispute adversary action.

Additional experience also includes Corporate Development and M&A assignments for a publicly traded Telecommunications Company, where he dealt extensively with troubled investments and contract dispute resolution.

Chuck held a 14-year tenure in the radio and media industry in various financial and operational capacities providing M&A, financing and post-acquisition restructuring services. He also spent four years with a Philadelphia-based regional public accounting firm where he provided accounting and management services to numerous companies in the entertainment, media and nonprofit industries.

Chuck has earned several professional certifications including CPA/CFF (Certified Public Accountant/Certified in Financial Forensics), CIRA (Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor), CVA (Certified Valuation Analyst) and CFE (Certified Forensic Examiner). He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA), the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and the Turnaround Management Association. In addition to his corporate financial experience, Chuck is also an experienced food service franchise owner.

Since 2005, Chuck has served as a volunteer and Director for the Support Center for Child Advocates. The center provides legal assistance and social service advocacy for abused and neglected children in Philadelphia County. One of the most successful volunteer models serving children in the country, Child Advocates has trained more than 3,500 attorneys who contribute pro bono services valued at more than $3.5 million annually.

Chuck earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from Drexel University.

Sean is a member of Bederson’s Insolvency and Litigation Services Department which specializes in bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, forensic accounting and other litigation services.

He has extensive experience in forensic accounting and working with clients in industries such as healthcare, retail, restaurants, professional services, not for profit, manufacturing and lending institutions.

His bankruptcy experience includes providing financial and related advisory services to Chapter 11, Chapter 7 and Liquidating Trustees, unsecured creditors committees and debtors-in-possession including fraud investigations leading to recovery of assets. He served as crisis manager in the EZ Mailing Services, et. al bankruptcy case which earned the firm an award in 2017 from The M&A advisor as Chapter 11 Reorganization (Over $25MM to $100MM) of the Year.

Many of Sean’s forensic investigations have included significant involvement with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Postal Inspector’s Office and the Office of the United States District Attorney. One engagement included reviewing and analyzing lease agreements by and between the Housing Authority of the City of Newark and Devils Arena Entertainment LLC and the Redevelopment Agreement by and between the Housing Authority and Devils Renaissance Development LLC.

His litigation work involves matters including court-appointed monitoring and overseeing companies on behalf of fiscal agents and receivers. He has been retained to assist in cases including the defense of accounting malpractice clients, shareholder, partner, matrimonial and member disputes and fraud investigations.

Sean serves as president of the New Jersey Chapter of the ACFE (Association of Certified Fraud Examiners) from 2016-2018. He is a member of the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and the NJCPA (New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants), where he served on the Political Action Committee Board of Trustees. He also serves as a Newark Regional Business Partnership Ambassador. He is frequently seen in New Jersey business publications such as NJBIZ, New Jersey Business, NJCPA and Commerce Magazine for his work on forensic and bankruptcy matters.

Sean earned a B.S. degree from The College of New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude.

James H. Ruitenberg, CPA, CFP® , PSA

Based in the firm’s Fairfield office, Jim is a Certified Financial Planner, a Public School Accountant, and a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the States of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.

He has over 35 years’ of experience providing privately held manufacturing and distribution companies with auditing, accounting and tax services. Jim also provides auditing and tax services to many nonprofit entities. He is well practiced in working with employee benefit plans and asbestos settlement trusts.

As Chairman of Bederson’s Accounting and Auditing Quality Control Committee, Jim performs peer reviews of other CPA firms and serves as Team Member and Review Team Captain.

As a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), Jim has served on the Accounting and Auditing Committee and Scholarship Committee. He has been an Officer (including President) of the Passaic County Chapter of the NJSCPA and was named to the NJSCPA’s “Best 50 Over 50” class in 2013. He was also named to New Jersey CPA Magazine’s 2014 “CPA List” for his contributions to the accounting profession and leadership in the NJCPA.

Jim is a Board Member of the National Development and Research Institute, a New York City research and educational nonprofit dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge of subject matter concerning numerous at-risk populations. He is also active in the Lions’ Club. He also served as an elected Member of his local Board of Education for eleven years.

Jules Schneider, CPA

Jules is based in Bederson’s Fairfield office. He has over 40 years’ experience serving clients in the wholesale, fine paper, earth moving and construction industries.

He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey and has extensive experience in accounting, auditing, tax, business advisory and estate planning. Jules is also an experienced business valuator and helps clients with purchase negotiations, sales of businesses and merger and acquisition transactions. He has served numerous clients in trustee and executor capacities.

Jules served as a trustee of the American Civil Liberties Union and was appointed to the New Jersey Committee for the Preservation of Traditional Arts. He is an active participant in community service projects and has served as director and treasurer of the Sing Out! Foundation.

Jules earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting  from Rutgers University.

Matthew Schwartz, CPA/CFF, CFE, CIRA

A Partner in the Insolvency and Litigation Services Department, Matt co-manages a division at Bederson that from 2012 to 2015 was awarded 17 medals in New Jersey Law Journal’s “Best Of” surveys for forensic accounting, bankruptcy valuations, litigation accounting, business valuations, economic damages, expert witness testimony, corporate investigations and matrimonial financial expert. Matt is responsible for overseeing engagements and testifying regarding all aspects of forensic engagements, including bankruptcy, insolvency, fraud, damages and tax matters.

He has appeared and testified in Bankruptcy and State Courts in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. He has been retained by Trustees, Secured Creditors, Creditors’ Committees, Debtors, Plaintiffs and Defendants and has served as Liquidating Agent. He has also investigated and uncovered numerous defalcations, leading to recoveries and arrests. In that capacity, Matt received recognition from the FBI in 2010 for his work on New Jersey Affordable Housing – one of the largest bankruptcy fraud cases in New Jersey’s history.

In addition to his financial investigative work, Matt has completed the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediator’s Civil Mediation Training Program as well its Civil Mediation Apprenticeship.

Matt has lectured on insolvency and tax matters for organizations including various chapters of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, Hunterdon Medical Center, Essex County Bar Association, Lorman Education Services, AGN (an international affiliation of independent and separate accounting firms), Association of Commercial Finance Attorney Law Firms, publicly held companies, the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors and the NJ Association of Legal Administrators.

He has also developed and taught courses on tax, EDP investigations and insolvency as well as college level courses at Warren County Community College and Kean University.

Matt is a member of professional organizations including: the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, where he chaired the Bankruptcy Task Force; New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants; and The Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors, where he served as President in 2014. He is also a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, The Turnaround Management Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute, where he served on the “Cracking the Code” Editorial Board. Matt is a board member and Chairman of the Audit Committee for Alzheimer’s New Jersey. He is Past President of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the West Orange Lions Club. He served as Treasurer and Capital Campaign Steering Committee Member of Latino Justice PRLDEF, an organization which champions the legal and educational rights of Latino-Americans.

Matt majored in economics at the University of Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated with Distinction and he earned an MBA in Accounting from Rutgers University.

Based in the firm’s Fairfield office, Ken is the leader of the firm’s Management Information Services and its Accounting and Auditing Department. He is responsible for Bederson’s fiscal operations, technological growth and the administration of its quality control policies and procedures.

Ken provides audit, accounting, tax compliance and planning services to clients in industries including professional services, not-for-profit, wholesale/distribution, manufacturing, government, housing and urban development.
Ken also assists clients with complex technological and financial management challenges.

Ken is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Jersey as well as a licensed public school accountant. He is a member of the (NJCPA) New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and the (AICPA) American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  In addition to his membership in professional organizations, Ken is also an active participant and board member of nonprofit organizations known for providing family support, education and related services.
