A Brief Spotlight on the Professional Accomplishments of our Friend, Associate, and Industry Titan- Edward P. Bond.
With love, respect and gratitude.

Ed was with Bederson since its infancy, serving as Partner, Managing Partner and later, Chairman. He was responsible for developing the firm’s insolvency and litigation services division, making Bederson one of the first accounting firms in the State with a niche bankruptcy practice. Ed was personally involved with hundreds of bankruptcy cases during the course of his career. He was widely pursued for his expertise in bankruptcy and forensic accounting by industry peers well into his 80’s. Even at 85 years-old, Ed was appointed as “Independent Managing Director” by a Bankruptcy Judge in Central Islip.

Early in his career, Ed was Partner, and later President of a member brokerage firm of the New York and American Stock Exchange where he set up and established the clearing operation and back-office facility converting a manual system to automation. He supervised the transfer of more than 10,000 retail accounts to a major clearing brokerage firm when it was determined that the economics involved favored going from clearing to non-clearing. He was elected as the sole public member of the Nominating Committee of the American Stock Exchange Board of Governors.

He served on a committee with Judge Moore and then Assistant U.S. Trustee Novalyn Winfield to evaluate the role of Examiner in the district. He testified as an expert witness repeatedly throughout his career, and served as an examiner appointed by the office of the U.S. Trustee. He also acted as Trustee for numerous matters including the successful Chapter 11 reorganization of Dr. Madis Laboratories (100% cash plus interest to all creditors – secured and unsecured).

He was a court appointed mediator, a responsible person, a receiver, an umpire, a fiscal agent and an arbitrator and acted (along with Bederson) as the bankruptcy and financial consultant to the Futures Representatives in the Asbestos Bankruptcies of G-1 Holdings, Federal-Mogul, NARCO, A.P. Green (Global Industrial Technologies, Inc.), and AcandS.

Ed maintained a leadership position in the financial and business community for more than 45 years, including serving two years as President of the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy. He was a member of the ABI, NABT and was, of course, dually licensed as CIRA and a CFE.

Ed was a featured seminar speaker for many organizations including the New Jersey Panel of Bankruptcy Trustees and the New Jersey Institute for continuing Legal Education. His article,  “Anatomy of a Successful Turnaround in Chapter 11″ was published by Turnarounds & Workouts Magazine. Ed participated as an Expert Witness in a Moot Court proceeding for law students at Seton Hall University, and also made a presentation on forensic accounting at Fairleigh Dickinson University

He served on the Daughters of Israel Board of Directors as Treasurer and Member of the Board of Directors of East Orange General Hospital. He was also a Member of the Maplewood Country Club Board of Directors

Ed was named “Outstanding Young Man of America” by the PAL. He served as Trustee for the PAL Boys’ Club. He served as Treasurer, Vice President and Member of the Board of the Valerie Fund, President of the Newark Jaycees and Treasurer of the State of New Jersey Jaycees.

At the request of President Richard Nixon, he served as the State Citizens’ Chairman of the SBA. He was a former President of Executive Exchange and served as Treasurer of the Ruth Bass Foundation. He was past President of the Garden State Cancer Center Foundation, past Board Member and Chairman of the Audit Committee for “The Scholarship Fund For Inner City Children.”

Ed received a 2020 Icon Award from NJBIZ, he was named Distinguished Fellow by the AIRA, received a Lifetime Leadership Award by Global TMA’s 10th Annual Turnaround Atlas Awards and was the Valerie Fund’s Thanksgiving Ball Honoree in 2013.

Today, after more than 60 years, included in Bederson’s client family are long-time relationships in the legal and financial community, and three generations of clients originally established by Ed Bond.

A Message from Managing Partner, Mark A. Mazza on the passing of Edward P. Bond

I joined Bederson straight out of college, and worked with Ed every year-since, until he retired several years ago. That’s a long time.  Ed taught me everything I know and guided me from greenhorn to managing partner. We had a familial, authentic bond that I will treasure forever. He was my mentor, partner and friend. Ed and I experienced decades of game plans, twists, turns, victories and close calls- together.

Ed was a self-made man from humble beginnings, who was intelligent, intuitive, street smart and had a keen understanding of people.  The bankruptcy business he built not only relied upon his technical prowess, but extraordinary people skills and solid character which earned the trust of the legal and financial community.

In all my years working alongside Ed, I never saw him show disrespect to anyone due to their station in life, religion, ethnicity, or anything else- everyone was equal to Ed, and deserving of kindness and dignity. People felt his genuineness and loved him for it.  He lifted others.

I am enormously grateful for having the privilege of having Ed’s wisdom, mentorship, trust and friendship extended to me for over 50 years. His admirable qualities are forever entwined into the fabric of the Bederson culture and we are all better off for it.

Ed was pure class, a great man, and an industry icon. He will live on in our hearts, our memory, and in our way of doing business.
