In 1937, CPA Sid Bederson started his business in Newark, New Jersey. The sole practitioner provided financial statements, compilations and tax work to businesses and individuals. The start-up underwent a number of mergers with individual practitioners and smaller firms, including a partnership with Ed Bond, who came to serve as the firm’s Managing Partner and ultimately, Chairman.
Bederson steadily grew, responding to market and client needs through innovation and the development of specialized capabilities. In addition to its robust tax, accounting and auditing work, during the 1960’s, the firm handled a number of high profile bankruptcy cases; becoming one of the first firms in New Jersey to establish its own forensic/litigation services accounting division.
In the early 1970’s, the firm relocated to Prospect Avenue in West Orange and continued to hone its specializations and grow. Ten years later, the firm outgrew its space and moved to Northfield Avenue in West Orange. The litigation services division occupied a separate floor and began to operate as a distinct entity, handling some of the biggest bankruptcy/fraud cases in New Jersey history. The accounting, tax and auditing side of the business was too, in full stride, continually sharpening their technical skills and recruiting CPAs with highly specialized capability. During the next two decades, the firm continued to expand, focusing on world class client service, new technology and named Mark Mazza its Managing Partner.
In 2007, the litigation services division outgrew its space and relocated to Mt. Pleasant Avenue in West Orange.
In 2010, the firm received recognition from the FBI for work on one of the largest bankruptcy fraud cases in NJ history.
Since 2012, Bederson has been named to the “Best of” class by the readers of the New Jersey Law Journal for being selected as one of the top 3 accounting firms in New Jersey for accounting services provided to the legal community in seven different categories. In 2018 Bederson was named to the New Jersey Law Journal’s Hall of Fame.
The accounting, auditing and tax division continues to earn an impeccable reputation for quality. Every peer review cycle, the firm has received an “unmodified” rating, which is the highest rating possible.
